The Song of Wheat in a Landscape, 2016

Antje Majewski is inspired by ancient agriculture and its spread from the Fertile Crescent to  Germany, the story of Cain and Abel, the history of wheat, and the linguistic connections between Afroasiatic languages (i.e. Arabic, Hebrew, Somali, Amharic, Hausa, Oromo, Tamazight). These interests are manifested in Majewski’s „Song of Wheat in a  Landscape,” an installation comprised of a video, a poem, and a large painting made collaboratively with people based in or around Tel Aviv whose names correspond to geographic elements, such as valleys, fields, trees, flowers, the sun and moon, etc. The deep connections to the land by Israelis, Palestinians, and other local groups is often expressed through the poetry of the names of their people. By paralleling these eponymous metaphors with visual counterparts, Majewski literally mirrors back to us a landscape representational of our collective sense of place.

I had the honor of participating in Antje Majewski’s latest art work – Landscape Painting.
She gathered people from different religions and ethnic groups that live here in Israel, who all have this in common: they are named after an element of nature.
She asked us to place our bodies on the canvas, and then sketched them. Sometimes the whole body, sometimes just body parts. Then, using soil which she somehow turned into paint, she painted an absolutely breathtaking landscape painting.
On the opening of the exhibition, Antje asked us to write our names onto the places in the painting where we were represented. The names were written in Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic and English.
The painting was exhibited at the CCA in tlv, and will be on show later on at the n.b.k., Berlin.
